Answering Tough Questions

Many Christians are dissuaded from sharing their faith because they feel they could not answer the sorts of questions many non-Christians throw at them: existence of God, divinity of Christ, hell, suffering and a good God, etc.

First of all, this is often because Christians resort to some glib throwaway answer to avoid dealing with the question, an answer which is totally inadequate for the sceptic and leads them to becoming even more sure of the non-truth of Christianity. Don't give glib answers, non-Christians won't be fooled by them

Second of all, glib answers are often given because the Christian thinks they couldn't possibly admit they can't answer the question or that they struggle with that question too. When in fact, this sort of answer is far better! Tell the questioner that you will get back to them on that particular question, and don't be afraid to admit that many Christians struggle with the same issues. Be honest with your friends, let them see you are human too

Finally, do be prepared to do a little research and get back to your friend on it. That shows them you are determined to demonstrate the truth of what you believe and you aren't afraid to deal with their questions. If they are a genuine seeker, they'll appreciate it. The material below may prove useful to you in answering many common challenges to the faith. Don't let a questioner off until they have had to deal with the answer to their question!

  1. How do you know God exists?
  2. Isn't God different in the Old and New Testaments?
  3. Isn't there more than one way to God?
  4. Is belief in the Trinity a belief in three Gods?
  5. Why does a good God allow evil to exist?
  6. What about all the hypocrites in the Church?
  7. What about those who have never heard the Gospel?
  8. Isn't it enough to be sincere?
  9. Isn't Christianity just a psychological crutch?
  10. I'm a good person, won't God accept me?
  11. Can you prove Christianity scientifically?
