- The N. Ireland Cancer Registry is part of the Department of
Epidemiology & Public
- Health and was established in 1994 from the old registry run
by the DHSS since 1959.
- To provide accurate, timely information on cancers occurring
in the population of
- Northern Ireland to enable research, planning and education
so the burden of
- disease may be reduced.
- Department of Health & Social Services 70%
- Ulster Cancer Foundation 30%
- Information on cancer will be obtained automatically from
hospital pathology
- laboratories and the Patient Administration System (PAS) with
links to breast
- and cervical screening programmes and death certificates.

- Acquiring computer system - estimated date of implementation
: October 1996
- Pilot PAS and hospital pathology information for 1993 acquired
for most sites
- Currently exploring acquisition of data from primary care,
radiology, etc.
