Freshers All-Ireland 7-a-side Blitz 2002

The annual All-Ireland Freshers 7-a-side tournament this year took place Friday 8th November and was hosted by Trinity College and Inchicore College. Matches took place at Trinity's Grounds in Santry, Dublin. Our Freshers team travelled to Dublin on Thursday 7th in preparation for the tournament and stayed over night in Isaacs Hostel in the centre of Dublin before making the early start to the Santry playing fields. The Queen’s girls were drawn in a group with tough opposition: Trinity, UCD and University of Limerick. The QUB panel were as follows:

Name Club and County
Nicola McCrossan (Captain) St Endas Omagh, Co. Tyrone
Tina Donnelly Dromore, Co. Tyrone

Match 1: QUB V TRINITY

In the first match of the day the girls managed to draw with Trinity in wet and windswept conditions: QUB 4.0 Trinity 3.3. Goals coming from Tina Donnelly (2), Karen Keown and Claire O'Hagan.

Match 2: QUB V UCD

Their second match was against holders of the Freshers Cup UCD. Although only managing to score two points through Karen Keown they held UCD to 1.6. (Team: Orlaith Hendron, Nicola McCrossan [Capt], Mary Hanley, Tina Donnelly, Karen Keown [0.2], Carol Ann O’Kane, Claire O’Hagan).

Match 3: QUB V UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK

In the final group match, a dominant Limerick side won out 3.6 to QUB 0.2, Tina Donnelly getting both Queens points.

PENALTY SHOOT OUT: QUB V TRINITY

These results meant QUB were drawn on points with Trinity and a penalty shoot out was required to decide who would go through to the Plate semi-final. Trinity took the first penalty but sent it wide of the post. Queens captain Nicola McCrossan stepped up to take our first penalty but it was saved, Trinity then scored their first penalty with their second attempt. QUBs second penalty taken by Mary Hanley was saved as was Trinity’s third attempt by goalie Orlaith Hendron. Tina Donnelly confidently sloted home our third attempt, Trinity scored their second penalty and Elaine Dinsmore scored our second penalty in the fourth round. Trinity scored their final attempt and the uneviable task of taken our last penalty was left to Karen Keown who unfortunatley under pressure put the ball wide of the post. Trinity won out 3-2.

Throughout the day the young team was supported by a large and vocal Queens posse, wearing specially designed T-shirts (courtesy of Ciara, Finola and Ruth), voted supporters of the tournament they put their success down to the intensive training in Q Bar the previous night!!

While some of the group got an early train back to Belfast the rest headed to Aideen's B & B in Lucan. All headed out to Ozone in Lexlip for what turned out to be a great nights craic with plenty of 'randoms'. A tired and hungover group of Queenies made their way back to Belfast on Saturday morning.

Lynch Cup QUB V UUJ (Report appeared in Newry Democrat by our own roving reporter Cat Fegan)

Theory: Popular opinion would suggest that The University Of Ulster Jordanstown has a sporting achievement record that beats Queens University Belfast hands down. Fact: Queens’s ladies Gaelic Football team well and truly thrashed their Jordanstown counterparts on Wednesday last. Its true to say that varsity rivalry both on and off the pitch has long since been a hotly debated pastime amongst students the city over, and true to form the QUB ladies managed to put a lot of ghosts to rest in the competitive sports department and proved that some people do have it all. In all their Gaelic glory they boarded the Poly Trolley from Queens to Jordanstown and greeted the seaside factory with arms wide open. The game which unfolded was a victory well worth the wait. In fairness both sides put up a steady fight, some taking the word fight in the literal sense and thinking they were in a boxing ring, but desperation can do crazy things to a girl, a theory which was confirmed by both sides in the Bot that night. A freak spell of hail and fork lightening signalled a brief postponement of the game just before half time, the referee claiming it was too dangerous to play on, much to the relief of a certain tangoed team, grateful for being spared the shame of streaky legs. Yes, fake tan tends to run in the rain girls; surely all that time spent at the seaside would make you aware of that. Recommencement of an exciting second half saw the ‘sporting superiority’ of the Poly girls flounder to basic talent on behalf on the opposing side. On their triumphant journey back to the Poly trolley bus stop, the students from the ‘Malone Road Institute of Technology’ i.e. Queens, as humorously described by staff at Jordanstown, passed corridors of classes holding all kinds of exciting courses ranging from bun baking to finger painting, not to mention an unrivalled ‘guttie’ studies centre, and were genuinely envious of the spellbinding degrees of academic excellence. At the end of the day it’s only a game they were told. Just like a degree studied at Jordanstown is no different from one studied at Queens.
