Queen's Ladies Gaelic Football Club 1998/1999 Season

Chairperson: Marcella Monaghan Enniskillen
Secretary: Ann-Marie O’Reilly St. Pats, Donagh
Tresurer: Sharon Daly and Niamh McGowan Tullysaran and Enniskillen

All-Ireland Freshers’ Blitz
At this competition the girls were unfortuanaltely placed in a very tough group and were beaten by the eventual finalists in the qualifying games.

Northern Colleges League
Division I: QUB firsts got off to an impressive start with victories over St. Marys UUC and an excellent competitive drawn match with UUJ. As in the previous year Sligo IT proved too strong for Queens. However after and Ulster Council meeting it was revealed that Sligo had been playing an illegal player and were disqualified from the competition so the biggest Ulster rivals Jordanstown and Queens meet in the League final, a match which QUB were to lose. Division II: The seconds unfortunately did not reach the League final, as the ‘Poly’ proved too strong. However towards the end of the campaign they were showing great potential.

Dowd Cup 1999

This was definiatly the highlight of the clubs year. QUB I played UUC and had an excellent victory in what proved to be a very physical game. Saturday saw Queen’ second proceed to the Plate Final with an impressive victory over UU Magee and infact in this match Queens secnds recorded the Top Score of the competition. Sunday was an excellent day for the club with representation in both the Plate and up final for the first time in its history. Unfortunately the seconds were defeated by UUJ II but Queens defeated Jordanstown firsts in the Cup Final to retain the title ‘Dowd Cup Champions’ for 3 years in a row. An unprecedented record had been set by Queens in Ulster Ladies Gaelic Football.

O’Connor Cup
Unfortunately Queens exited this competition at an early stage when they were defeated by an impressive team from Waterford RTC.

Lynch Cup 1999
Our Seconds team again showed their continuing success by proceeding to the All-Ireland Quarter-final however they failed to book a place at the Championship final weekend. This however was an impressive achievement for a team, which had only been established for two years.

Ulster 7 a side Blitz
QUB hosted this annual event and representatives from several Ulster Colleges had a very good day. Referees and other management present commended QUB on the organisation of the event and what made it even more special was that QUB retained the cup and our own star Orlaith Kirk was awarded with MVP.

Club and Personal Achievements
Blues Awards
This year the club received both Half and Full Blues. Nine of our players received full Blues and four of our players received Half Blues. Another excellent achievement for the club and Full Blues were presented to the recipients at the Blues Dinner

Ulster and All-Ireland Combined Colleges
