The ultimate prize in
Ulster Colleges Ladies Football takes its name
from a former president of Cumann Peile Gael
na mBan, Tom Dowd. A devoted Crosserlough, Co.
Cavan clubman, Tom Dowd has had a long association
with Ladies Gaelic, coaching Cavan to All-Ireland
Senior glory in 1977.
The inaugural Dowd Cup
was hosted by UU Coleraine with UUJ winning
the competation. UUJ have dominated the competition,
winning it seven times. 2004 saw UUJ lift their
fifth crown in a row. Queen's have won the competation
three times 1997, 1998 and 1999. The competition
has traditionally been held around the third
week of February , however in '95 fixture at
the end of March meant a clash with the O'Connor
Cup weekend. Having qualified for both, UUJ
opted for the latter and thus did not participate
in the Dowd Cup.
