Motions to Congress

Motion for General Congress

Legal Services

Since the merger many UCU branches have experienced a notable deterioration in the access to legal services and advice. There is no longer ready access to local solicitors; legal assistance is suspended prematurely without adequate consultation with local officers; and access to the service requires compliance with a more lengthy and bureaucratic process.

Congress calls on the executive to review UCU’s provision of legal services with a view to providing a responsive service which can be readily accessed by officers and members and which can take local needs into account.

Motion for HE section

Academic Freedom

Many universities now take the view that academic freedom relates not to the ability to pursue research questions of ones choosing but to the ability to express unpopular views. Moves in this direction are partly driven by issues relating to cost where research is capital intensive. New metrics-based proposals for research assessment are likely to strengthen these tendencies and apply them in a wider range of contexts.

This congress calls on the executive to embark on a campaign to defend academic freedom by all appropriate means.
